In the absence of her father, the young lioness relied on her mother for leadership.

Her mother was doing her best to scare them off and lead the pride into a stand. She was having little success.

One of the Crinos called out, strange sounds that bore no meaning. He was scanning the crowd looking for something he did not seem to find.

The young lioness was very concerned with her father's absence, but stayed with her mother and tried to help her lead.

When it was obvious that they would not find what they were looking for, another one of the Crinos yelled out in anger, but the group retreated. The pride remained nervous, as the five hyenas remained nearby. They were waiting several dozen meters away. Far enough to stop causing a commotion, but close enough to cause unease.

Her mother went out, she began to sniff around for something. She went to the edge of the pride's usual hanging place, which was only a fraction of the pride's full territory. She was looking for something, or someone.

It did not take very long for the two lionesses to understand.

Male lions often have to travel around the edge of a pride's territory. As they do, they regularly spray urine to mark the land as belonging to the pride. The entire thing can take a couple of week. But, since this normally chases away invaders it is very important to do it.

This task had been overdue and it was obvious enough, even for their animal intellect, that he had left this morning to start this two weeks long process.

The young lioness, not knowing what to do, relied on her mother's and the other older lioness' leadership to sort out the situation.

Now having gotten the scent, her mother began to jog in the direction of her father.

The rest of the pride returned to being lazy, although tension was still perceptible. So were the hyenas.

The young lioness, having spent much time in the last few days in the company of her father, her instinc told her that she might receive a better reception than her mother would.

The two lionesses made their way behind the alpha male. Lions weren't too good with speed. They could sprint fast, but only for short periods of time. But by keeping a decent pace without actually running, they caught up her walking father within a few hours. He was urinating lazily here and there.

Her mother still higher than she was within the pride's hierarchy, the young lioness let her walk forward, but her father, if he looked at her, could see that all of her demeanour screamed trouble.

The father was surprised and confused at this situation. It made no sense for females to join him in this. And he sure did not wish for company during this time of peace and tranquility. At first, he greeted them with a low growl. Then, he stopped and began to show curiosity. His more than Lion intellect was stepping into gears. He looked from one female to the other. Twice, then thrice. And then understanding and bloodlust came into his eyes.

He darted back towards the pride at all speeds as if trying to be there right now. He would not be able to keep this up for long.

Re: Prologue: The Bastet's Pride

Post by Admin on Sat 30 Nov - 16:27

When the trio returned home, they were exhausted. But hate fueled her father's heart. And she had seen already how strong his hate burned. He went all across the pride to look at everyone in it. Each individuals without exception and he made sure they were unhurt. Including those he had himself mistreated, or wounded, in the past. The young playful Lioness he had hit recently was scared of him out of her mind, but allowed him to examine her while she was trembling. Nearby, her mother was looking while pacing with a predatory tone to her body language. She had grown more savage, she was ready to pounce and fight for her cub. When he was done, he tried to examine the mother but she hissed and growled and roared and slashed and snarled and kicked. There was no getting near her without beating her senseless... or cowering her into submission. Her father was not nearly a patient lion, he turned to his Chrinos form and roared in her face with such a violent volume that she was dizzy, and possibly unable to hear. As she struggled to recuperate, he put one paw on her chest and lifted her before slamming her, almost gently, on her back. She gave up her struggled entirely. She was docile and limp. And possibly mentally marked for life.

Now reassured that everyone in his pride was safe and sound, with the exception of one traumatized and likely demented lioness, he began to look for his enemies. Sniffing for their scent.

While her father inspected the pride, the young lioness rested. When he started sniffing around for the hyenas, she joined him.

Re: Prologue: The Bastet's Pride

He looked around for a time, until the scent came to him. Once it did, hate settled in his eyes once more. He started off on all fours mustering all the speed in could from the Lion shape. He would grow less tired this way. But, he still ran too fast for a Lion. He would be weakened for the obvious incoming fight, but he did not care.

It was only when he saw them, and realized that there were five of them that he hesitated. But he was not subtle in his approach and they had heard him. They turned around, all into their big hyena form except for one who was taking the Chrinos form. Both groups were looking at each other from afar. The Chrinos stepped forward from his group towards his father, when he was a good distance from his allies, he lowered himself into the floor, kneeling in the manner of a Samourai. But with none of the grace and beauty, for the Hyenas were not a graceful folk.

This odd behavior, made no sense to the Lioness following her father. He was opening himself attacks. He'd killed himself just as much as if he's opened his own throat. But, her father did not run to tear him apart. He walked up to the Chrinos and sat. Showing no fear fear of the Chrinos.

If at all possible, the following event made even less sense. The Chrinos began to emit series of noises. He was calm, but firm. To answer, her father had to take the Chrinos form as well and served him the same kind of sounds. Only he was clearly far, far less fluent and did not master his emotions. They exchanged noises for a time. Until her father snapped and it was clear this was over. The Chrinos stood up, aware that he had before him a foe that was at least his equal and that his friends were far behind. He emited a last series of noises and began to step back. Her father followed a few steps and growled but did not pounce.

When her father stopped the Ajaba rejoined his group and they left. It was clear that her father was not in a good mood.

Her father in a foul mood scared her, and so the lioness was uneasy. If her father did not call for her, she would return to the pride and leave him with his bad temper. This was usually the wise thing to do.

Re: Prologue: The Bastet's Pride

Both lions returned to the pride. Her father did not return to mark the territory of the pride. Instead, he remained behind. He did not seem to dare leave the pride undefended in his absence. Yet, if he did not go and mark their lands, they would soon receive violent claims from other nearby predators. There was no good solution. But, the hyenas that could change shapes seemed to worry him far more than any predators lacking this advantage.

Over the course of the next few days, however, he was kinder now than ever he'd been. He did not mind noisy squabbles quite as much as he used to. Growling for silence only when he needed to hear in the distance. The pride's mood began to rise, even in his presence now that playing was allowed. Young ones that had lost the will to enjoy life's simplest pleasures, were once again prowling about and pouncing on unsuspecting adults as they had before they learned to fear the alpha male.

The pride's second male had suddenly begun to receive attention as well. Instead of being merely tolerated, he was now required. Her father would surprise and fight him regularly, to keep him on his toes and train him in battle against real foes. The pride had no idea what this change meant. But, for now they were content with two important fact: They were happier than ever before, and their leader was making some of them more efficient. They understood what that meant. Survival. Food.
